Evidence based risk reduction recommendations for people at risk or with breast cancer-related lymphedema.

The Pathways Editorial Board is pleased to promote recently published research along various lymphedema-related themes from the 2023 ACS – LANA Summit, “Forward Momentum – Future Steps in Lymphedema Management.” This is the first of a series of interviews with some of the authors who were involved, discussing the process, but more importantly, soliciting their ideas of how to translate this new knowledge into clinical practice. This article presents new evidence-based risk reduction recommendations for individuals at risk of or living with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). Based on extensive research and expert consensus, the recommendations clarify which daily precautions are supported by scientific evidence and distinguish between guidance for at-risk individuals versus those already diagnosed with BCRL. Key findings include the impact of blood pressure measurements, injections, skin care, exercise, and travel on lymphedema risk. The article also highlights efforts to disseminate these guidelines to clinicians, patients, and healthcare organizations, aiming to replace outdated precautionary advice with clear, research-backed recommendations. The ultimate goal is to enhance patient education, clinical practice, and long-term management of BCRL.
